Are you Fit to Dive?
Many of us are unaware of medical conditions which may prevent us from diving. Perforated Eardrum, dentures, diabetes, history of epilepsy, haemophilia and even obesity can disqualify you from diving. Those suffering from asthma, arthritis or any deformity which limits swimming ability may also encounter difficulties whilst diving. For your own safety and well being, it is vital that you check your fitness and suitability for diving BEFORE you consider booking your course or trip. Any family doctor/GP (general practitioner) can certify you fit to dive - you do not need to go to a doctor specialising in scuba diving medicals. There are a series of medical forms you and your doctor will need to complete, and your doctor will need to conduct a standard ‘recreational sports diver medical’ to ensure you are physically and mentally fit to dive and participate in the project. Self-declaration forms are only valid for one year and must be renewed each time they expire, usually as part of renewing your BSAC or PADI membership. You are responsible for making sure you are fit to dive; any changes in health which may effect this must be declared and your status re-assessed. If you have difficulty locating a doctor to perform the
medical, UK participants can visit the HSE web site for a list of HSE approved
doctors.
